Ellas

Paula Saneaux

Funglode Art Gallery. Santo Domingo

Saneaux’s women come from conventional and intimate places. They watch us with a gaze that confronts an enemy. “Ellas” is the second solo show of the Dominican, Paula Saneaux, presented in the art gallery of Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) on the 20th of this past August.

In the paradoxical world of this artist, there is a close relationship and sometimes conflict, between classic art and the contemporary. There are riddles, Velasquez inspired characters, eternal grays and  then there’s Ellas (them), exposed with naturalness, although from another level and more than just a simple nudity. As the poet and art critic Jonathan Goodman says: “The artist objectively describes the body in poses that remind us of art’s history, but this time there is something new: an objectivity that sustains the models’ dignity even as they show us themselves in a state of undress. If the erotic beckons, so does the women’s distancing from the desire they create.”

Graduated from Parsons The New School of Design in New York and Altos de Chavon School of Design, Paula Saneaux has been recognized in competitions and has received awards and grants such as The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant from Canada, a mention in II Biennial of Candido Bido Museum and has participated in the Biennial XXI Eduardo León Jimenes.
